Malle began experimenting with art in earnest after moving to New York City in 1978 to attend the School of Visual Arts. He took part in gritty street scenes and also painted on top of graffiti he found on abandoned city walls. In 1980, he created “No. 4” while experimenting with basing his paintings on photographs of friends and family. The painting is an unusual abstract expressionist work, which earned him a lot of attention among the art community. The painting sold for $4.7 million at auction in 1990, setting a record for sales at that time. Malle later donated $1 million of the proceeds to a new art gallery named for him in Paris. Fragrance manufacturer David Bouley purchased the painting in 2004 for $18 million.

Malle’s paintings have been featured in several exhibitions, including a retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art which took place in 2005 and another showing at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He has also painted portraits of several public figures, including the Dalai Lama and Bill Clinton. Malle’s style is very influenced by popular culture as he employs several common images from pop art and graffiti on many of his works. Frederick Malle perfume was launched in 1990 by the Firmenich group, a Perfume company created in 1892. The perfume is composed of notes of mint, blackcurrant, mandarin and violet.
